Periodontal Diseases
Periodontal diseases in dentistry are gum diseases that occur due to trauma or infection of the tissues that protect the gums and teeth. The most common cause of tooth loss after decay is gum disease. Since most of them progress painlessly, they can be difficult for patients to notice, and the risk of losing the tooth increases if it is delayed. However, early-diagnosed gum diseases can achieve very successful results and prevent tooth loss. In the initial stage of gum disease, gum inflammation occurs. During this stage, gum bleeding, redness and swelling occur in the gums. Although it does not cause much discomfort at first, it can cause permanent damage to the jaw bone in the future.
Symptoms of Gum Disease
- Bleeding gums
- Red, swollen and sensitive diet
- Loss of the connection between the tooth root and the gum, which we call periodontal pocket formation.
- Inflammation between teeth and gums
- The distance between teeth gradually widens, creating gaps
- Bad breath despite regular brushing
- Exposure of tooth roots
- Loose teeth
- Hot and cold sensitivity, tingling
What Causes Gum Disease?
The most effective cause of gum disease is microbial dental plaque. This plaque is a colorless layer on the surface of the teeth. Daily oral care is a prerequisite to get rid of this bacterial plaque. It is necessary to brush your teeth at least twice a day and use dental floss once a day. If this plaque is neglected to be cleaned, it will turn into dental tartar over time and cause gum disease.
In addition to microbial dental plaque, smoking, some systemic diseases such as diabetes, leukemia and AIDS, stress, the use of certain medications such as heart-blood pressure medications, anticonvulsants, antidepressants and oral contraceptives, and nutritional habits are also effective in the formation of gum diseases.
Crowding or occlusion problems that cause teeth not to be cleaned properly also accelerate gum disease. Having the teeth in a correct occlusion relationship is important for both hygiene and correct force distribution.
In recent years, the increasing habit of bruxism, that is, teeth grinding and clenching, in society also accelerates the existing gum problem. In addition, familial predisposition should be taken into consideration in risky individuals.
