Dental implants are usually installed during two separate procedures; the first is to place the implant itself in the existing space. The other is to have the tooth extracted, the bone prepared, and then a few months later, the new dental implant is placed.
The procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia in your dentist's office. The same anesthesia is used for tooth extraction. If you are afraid of the procedure, let your dentist know if you are feeling particularly anxious about the treatment, as they may give you a sedative to help you relax.
Who Can Get Dental Implants?
Dental implants are suitable for most adults who are in good general health and have healthy gums. They are not suitable for children and teenagers under the age of 18 because the underlying bones are still growing.
Your dentist may not recommend dental implants if:
Do you smoke?
If you have had radiotherapy to your jaw area
If you have diabetes that is not well controlled
Suffering from gum (periodontal) disease
However, every situation is different. Tell your dentist about any medical issues you have, and they can advise you if implants are an option for you.
