Tooth Extraction

Tooth Extraction

Tooth extraction is usually performed when the tooth is decayed, infected or damaged and cannot be saved with other treatment methods. The decision to extract the tooth is made when it is thought that leaving the tooth in the mouth will cause more harm to the person than removing it. It can also be preferred before orthodontic treatment or during the emergence of wisdom teeth due to the lack of space in the teeth.

Extreme Decay: Irreversible caries

Dental Infections: Abscessed or infected teeth.

Tooth Damage: Broken or cracked teeth.

Lack of Space: Creating space before orthodontic treatment.

Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth that have problems with eruption.

Impacted Teeth: Teeth that remain under the gums and cannot emerge properly.

Procedure

The tooth extraction procedure begins with a comprehensive examination and necessary imaging. After anesthesia is applied, the tooth is extracted. Since anesthesia is applied, there is no pain or ache during the procedure, but some pressure may be felt. Surgical techniques may be necessary, especially for impacted teeth or teeth with deep fractures.

Examination and Diagnosis

Determining whether tooth extraction is necessary.

Anesthesia Application

Local anesthesia for comfort.

Tooth Extraction

The tooth is extracted using the appropriate technique and the area is made suitable for healing.

The Healing Process

Tooth Extraction

The decision to extract the tooth is made when it is thought that leaving the tooth in the mouth will cause more harm to the person than removing it. Why Tooth Extraction?

  • Extreme Caries: Irreversible caries
  • Dental Infections: Abscessed or infected teeth.
  • Dental Damage: Broken or cracked teeth.
  • Lack of Space: Creating space before orthodontic treatment.
  • Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth that have problems with their eruption.
  • Impacted Teeth: Teeth that remain under the gums and cannot emerge properly.

How is Tooth Extraction Performed?

Normally, the extraction of decayed teeth in the mouth can be done with a simple extraction procedure, while broken or impacted teeth may require a more advanced surgical operation. The dentist first applies a tropical anesthetic to numb the area and prevent you from feeling pain. Then, a local anesthetic is injected. The tooth is gently moved with tools designed for each tooth. During this time, the patient never feels pain, but may feel slight pressure. After the tooth is extracted, a blood clot forms in the resulting cavity. The dentist closes the cavity with a gauze to stop the bleeding. Ozone therapy is always applied in our clinic to accelerate wound healing.

Teeth may be impacted or partially impacted in the mouth, outside of their normal positions.

Impacted Tooth Extraction

Due to the limited space in the jaw structure, teeth can remain buried under the gums, another tooth or bone. Wisdom teeth are at the highest risk of being buried. Buried teeth appear during the body's development process. While they help with chewing functions in some patients, they can develop in a way that harms oral and dental health or even general health in others. In this case, they need to be removed. However, if their relationship with the surrounding tissues and other teeth does not pose a risk, they can be monitored.

Semi-Empty Tooth Extraction

Decay; bacteria and food residues accumulate very easily around the partially buried tooth. This causes the adjacent tooth to decay. In order for this area, which is difficult to clean, not to cause decay, the partially buried tooth must be removed.

Gum Infection: When impacted teeth are partially erupted, bacteria accumulate under the gums and cause infection. Infection can cause discomfort such as bad breath, pain, swelling and, in later stages, difficulty opening the mouth.

How is Impacted Tooth Extraction Performed?

The ease or difficulty of impacted tooth surgery depends on certain conditions such as the location of the tooth, its position and root formation. Before the extraction, a two-dimensional dental x-ray or, if necessary, a three-dimensional tomography should be taken to examine the area in more detail.

For impacted tooth extraction, first topical and then local anesthesia is applied. Depending on its position, the tooth is removed as a whole or in parts.

The doctor decides which method is appropriate for the patient's general health. Thus, the patient does not feel any pain during the operation. After the extraction, the area is stitched. The stitches are removed after 1 week. After the operation, ozone therapy is applied to the extraction area.

After the extraction, swelling may occur in the area, and pain may develop as the anesthesia wears off. In this case, antibiotics and painkillers prescribed by the doctor should be used regularly.

Things to Consider After Tooth Extraction

  • Keep the sterile gauze placed in your extraction cavity for 20 minutes. If there is bleeding when you remove it after 20 minutes, put the spare sterile gauze we gave you.
  • Do not eat or drink anything for 2 hours.
  • Avoid hot food and drinks for 24 hours. Avoid grainy foods (rice, chickpeas, bulgur, etc.) as they can get stuck in your extraction cavity. Do not drink acidic drinks as they will affect the clot formed in the extraction area and cause bleeding again.
  • Avoid alcohol and cigarettes, which increase bleeding and delay healing.
  • Following the extraction, there will be bleeding in the form of leakage from the extraction site for 4-6 hours. Do not increase this bleeding by sucking or spitting.
  • Do not use a toothbrush for the first 24 hours. You can brush your teeth starting from the 2nd night.
  • Use the antibiotic given to you until the box is finished. When you have pain, use a painkiller other than aspirin.
  • If you experience any abnormal bleeding or pain, be sure to call and consult your physician.
