Pediatric Dentistry
The first visit to the dentist should be fun and positive. Your dentist should definitely be aware of your child's visit. Looking at your child while you are having dental treatment can have very dangerous results. If there are unnecessary fears around your child, such as needles, the result is usually disappointment.
The first session usually consists of getting to know each other and explaining how to brush their teeth. Sitting down a child who has come to the clinic with pain and pulling out their tooth is an invitation to a fearful adult.

Types of Pediatric Dentistry
All dentists know very well that the words used during the first visit can either relax the child or send them into a panic mode. After all, how many children do you know who enjoys hearing the words “needle” or “injection” when they sit in the dentist’s chair? Fear of the unknown is directly linked to children’s anxiety levels during a visit to the dentist.
In order to have a positive experience at the dentist, it is important to be sensitive in your conversations about your visit to the dentist. For this reason, the child, family and dentist should work together.
The aim is not to mislead the child, but simply to avoid developing a negative attitude towards dentistry.
It is a good idea to share with your child any positive experiences you may have had with your dentist. Remember, dentistry has made incredible advances; thanks to new technologies and techniques, dental treatments are now performed without any pain. Use words that do not evoke a negative reaction. For example; sleeping drink instead of needle or injection, buzz instead of drilling, cleaning the tooth instead of drilling, magic air instead of gas or nitric oxide, counting the teeth instead of examining, wiggling the tooth instead of pulling it, tickling the teeth instead of cleaning.
First Dentist Visit
The first visit to the dentist should be made after the first baby tooth has erupted. The first baby teeth usually erupt between 6 months and 1 year of age after birth. The purpose of the first examination by the pediatric dentist is to provide information about your child's oral health, nutrition and preventive practices and to continue oral and dental health with visits every 4-6 months.
Milk Teeth
Milk teeth are primarily important for nutrition, as are permanent teeth. Milk teeth are of great importance for chewing, nutrition and therefore growth and development. One of the most important functions of milk teeth is to act as placeholders for the permanent teeth that will come underneath. It is very important for milk teeth to be complete so that the teeth that will come underneath can line up properly.
Fissure Sealer
The purpose of fissure sealant is to cover the narrow, deep and irregular grooves of teeth with a fluid/liquid filling material before they decay and to obtain surfaces that can be cleaned more easily. It is a painless and easy procedure.
Fluor Application
There are many methods of applying fluoride (toothpaste, mouthwash, gel, varnish). When choosing which fluoride to apply, the child's age and caries risk are taken into consideration.
Space Maintainer
While fixed space maintainers are generally used in cases where a single tooth is missing, removable space maintainers are used in cases where more than one tooth is missing. It is not necessary to use a space maintainer for every missing primary tooth. The dentist decides whether a space maintainer is necessary based on clinical and radiographic examination.
What is Pediatric Dentistry?
Pediatric dentistry is a branch of dentistry that provides special care to protect the oral and dental health of children from infancy to adolescence. It provides a comprehensive approach to prevent oral health problems, treat existing problems, and promote healthy dental habits throughout children's development.
Preventive Dental Care: To protect children's dental health, regular dental check-ups, professional cleaning and fluoride applications are performed.
Prevention of Tooth Decay: Tooth decay is common in children. Dentists help prevent cavities with both preventive measures and early detection.
Importance of Milk Teeth: Milk teeth guide the permanent teeth to emerge properly and ensure that the child has a healthy dental structure.
Reducing Fear and Anxiety: Approaches specifically designed for children provide a positive dental experience by reducing fear of the dentist.
Monitoring Jaw and Tooth Development: Children's dental development is monitored and, when necessary, intervention is made to address orthodontic problems early.
Methods Used in Pediatric Dentistry
Children’s oral health should be addressed not only physiologically but also psychologically. Dentists help children develop healthy oral and dental habits in the long term by ensuring that they approach the treatment process positively. Methods used in this process include treatments such as fluoride applications, protective fissure sealants and tooth extractions. Regular dental check-ups starting at an early age contribute greatly to the protection of children’s dental health and the prevention of dental problems that may arise in the future.
