Lesions can develop for various reasons, such as infection, trauma, smoking, immune system disorders or diseases such as cancer.

Relieving Pain and Discomfort: Removal of the lesion that is causing pain, discomfort, or irritation.

Functional Recovery: Lesions can sometimes negatively affect functions such as chewing, speaking or maintaining oral hygiene.

Prevention of Recurrence: It reduces the risk of recurrence of the lesion.

Lesions can develop for various reasons, such as infection, trauma, smoking, immune system disorders or diseases such as cancer.

Diagnosis and Evaluation

The size of the lesion, its location, and its effect on surrounding tissues are evaluated and a decision is made as to whether it needs to be excised.

Anesthesia and Surgical Removal

Removal of the intraoral lesion under local anesthesia.

Improvement

Post-surgical care and follow-up recommendations.

Biopsy

The biopsy sample is sent to the pathology laboratory.

Lesion Excision Procedure

  1. Diagnosis and Evaluation:
    1. Before excision, it must be determined whether the lesion is benign or malignant. A biopsy may be performed for this purpose.
    2. The size of the lesion, its location and its effect on surrounding tissues are also important factors affecting the treatment plan.
  2. Anesthesia:
    1. Local anesthesia: Most intraoral lesion excisions are performed under local anesthesia. Anesthesia ensures that the patient does not feel any pain during the procedure.
    2. In some cases, sedation or general anesthesia may also be applied, especially for larger lesions, multiple lesions, or anxious patients.
  3. Surgical intervention:
    1. Excision and Removal of the Lesion: The area around the lesion is carefully surgically incised. After the lesion is completely removed, stitches are placed to ensure healing in order not to damage the surrounding tissues.
    2. BiopsyIf the lesion is likely to be malignant, a biopsy is performed during the procedure. The biopsy sample is sent to the pathology laboratory.
  4. Stitching and Healing Process:
    1. After the lesion is removed, the surrounding tissues are stitched closed.
    2. The recovery process after the procedure usually takes 1-2 weeks. The stitches are removed once the healing process is complete.
    3. During recovery, oral hygiene is very important. Attention should be paid to oral hygiene by brushing teeth and gargling.
  5. Results and Follow-up:
    1. Pathological ExaminationIf a biopsy is performed, you will learn what the lesion is and whether it is malignant or not through pathological examination results.
    2. Follow-up Inspections: Regular follow-up is important, especially after lesions that have a potential for malignancy. Again, it may be necessary to monitor the risk of growth or recurrence in benign lesions.

Post-Excision Care

The healing process after excision is important and the following care is recommended:

  • Good Oral Hygiene: Oral hygiene should be taken care of to prevent infection of the surgical area.
  • Consuming Soft FoodsAfter the procedure, soft and liquid foods should be preferred and hard foods should be avoided.
  • Pain and Infection Control: When necessary, painkillers and antibiotics should be used with a physician's recommendation.
