Systematic Diseases

The body gives us information about everything; sometimes a situation that seems like a wisdom toothache can be an ear infection. Therefore, correct diagnosis and planning are very important in observing the well-being of our patients. The body is a whole and evaluating the whole body together is very important in this sense.

Procedure

As dentists, we have the perspective of “There is no disease, there is only the patient” as Ibn Sina said, and because we know the importance of the mouth in the body, we see that the body is a whole and the oral environment is a messenger to us by experiencing different patients.

For example; Your veneers have been changed and there is redness and bleeding in a local area in your mouth that does not go away despite the normal healing process. This may indicate that you have allergic problems in your body.

If you have had your general dental treatments done and continue to have pain despite the expected average healing process, you may have fibromyalgia.

Dental Treatment in Systematic Diseases

Since the Egyptians, there have been definitions of dentists as "diagnosers". Even at that time, they represented dentists and medical doctors separately in hieroglyphic writing. We can easily understand the importance of dentists in general health from these definitions.

We have all often heard the saying, “The mouth is the mirror of the whole body.”

Did you know that sometimes when you go to the dentist for any dental problem, you can actually get a lot of information about the health of your body?

As dentists, we have the perspective of “There is no disease, there is only the patient” as Ibn Sina said, and because we know the importance of the mouth in the body, we see that the body is a whole and the oral environment is a messenger to us by experiencing different patients.

For example; Your veneers have been changed and there is redness and bleeding in a local area in your mouth that does not go away despite the normal healing process. This may indicate that you have allergic problems in your body.

If you have had your general dental treatments done and continue to have pain despite the expected average healing process, you may have fibromyalgia.

We often see that eighty percent of our patients, especially those who have problems with their entire jaw closure, also have problems with their spine. This situation can also progress as a result of single or double-sided tooth loss causing a spinal problem.

Delay in the healing process or abnormal tissue healing observed after surgical procedures (wisdom tooth extraction, implant surgery, etc.) in our patients,

  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Vitamin K deficiency
  • It makes us think that there is a suspicion of diabetes or a problem with the healing factors.

We always prefer to work with our partner physicians for these types of patients.

We have some patients who come to us with complaints of persistent toothache. These patients may have been examined by several dentists and no problems were found in their teeth, or the patient may have referred them for pain and had root canal treatment, but their pain still has not gone away. In such patients, a detailed patient history (anamnesis) is taken and conditions such as migraine, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis are definitely questioned, and then we refer them to our physician colleagues with whom we work as partners.

Diabetes (Sugar) Disease – Oral and Dental Health Relationship

In individuals with diabetes, if diabetes is not under control, this triggers gum disease. It can accelerate the formation of tooth decay by causing dry mouth. Especially in surgical procedures, due to delayed wound healing, regular physician follow-up, hemoglobin A1c control and regular medication use if necessary are very important for us.

The Relationship Between Oral and Dental Health in People with High Blood Pressure Problems

One of the questions our patients frequently ask us is, “Doctor, I have a blood pressure problem, can I have an implant or a tooth extraction?” The answer is, of course you can. What is important here is regular physician check-ups and regular use of your medications under the guidance of your physician.

In addition, since some blood pressure medications can cause dry mouth and/or bleeding gums, regular dentist check-ups and a diet rich in fiber foods should be recommended to compensate for the decay-causing effect of dry mouth.

What Does It Mean For Our Bodies To Be Acidic? How Does The Acidic Body Relate To Our Oral And Dental Health?

Our mouth structure, teeth, gum tissue are connected to our entire body system. Our saliva gives us more information about our body health than we think.

Our patients often tell us, "I brush my teeth and take care of my mouth, but my gums still bleed." So why does this bleeding occur? Have you ever thought about it?

Normally, the pH of our saliva varies between 7 and 7.1, which means it is neutral.

The sweet foods and drinks we eat during the day, carbohydrate-heavy foods such as pastries and bagels, reduce our oral pH from 7.5 to an acidic value of 5.5. As acidity increases, conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease are observed.

Normally, our blood pH is neutral. These can be caused by a person having a bad intestinal flora, a diet that is excessively sugary and carbohydrate-heavy (all foods containing flour, all foods that are packaged), heavy metal levels, which are mostly vaccines (in the past, vaccines were made under mercury pressure), living in areas with high air pollution, and amalgam fillings in the person.

If the acidity value is high in a person, cavities, gum diseases (gum recession and tartar), and bad breath are especially observed in the mouth. Corrosion (wear on the surface of the material) of amalgam fillings and old worn-out metal-supported coatings in the mouth increases. If the pH is low, i.e. acidic (pH < 7), corrosion definitely increases. As corrosion increases, conditions such as thyroid diseases, gum diseases, cavities, migraine, and headaches can be observed in the person.

Since the acidity of our body hardens the collagens that make up our main tissue, people experience gum recession and therefore tooth sensitivity.

In order to reduce wear and tear, the person's diet must be regulated and heavy metals must be gradually removed from the body. Therefore, Vegatest helps us in this regard.

With the analysis performed on a tube of blood taken from the person, information about the person's food sensitivities, the acidity level of the body, and the disorders of the intestinal flora can be obtained and necessary arrangements can be made.

As the corrosion in a person increases, the corrosion level of the restorations in the mouth increases due to the increase in the acidity level. It is possible to count amalgam fillings among these restorations. The corrosion caused by the acidic environment in the mouth increases the flow between amalgam fillings, gold fillings, and metal coatings, thus increasing the amount of heavy metals in the person.

The intestinal flora contains beneficial bacteria that are necessary for our body. While there are normally 10 to 13 beneficial bacteria in our body, the bacteria living in our intestinal flora ensure that enzymes in our body work and vitamins are absorbed. Beneficial bacteria, which we call probiotics, create a protective layer on the intestinal surface and provide selective permeability to our intestines. Thus, it prevents the body from becoming acidic by ensuring that our blood pH and saliva pH remain neutral.

Therefore, a healthy intestinal flora, an oral flora with a neutral pH (7-7.1), is essential for our general and holistic health.

At this point, a personalized diet and, if necessary, probiotic support are very important in balancing our oral and dental health.

The body gives us information about everything; sometimes what seems like a wisdom toothache can be an ear infection.

Therefore, correct diagnosis and planning are very important in observing the well-being of our patients.

The body is a whole and evaluating the whole body together is very important in this sense.
