Tooth loss can cause aesthetic and functional problems. If a tooth is not replaced for a long time, the structures of other teeth may deteriorate. The most commonly preferred treatment method for missing teeth today is implant applications. However, there are various alternative solutions for people who do not want implant treatment or are not suitable for this treatment.

Traditional Removable Dentures: Depending on the condition of the missing teeth, full or partial removable dentures can be applied. It aims to provide an aesthetic appearance while fulfilling the chewing function.

Bridge Applications: Bridges replace the missing tooth by taking support from the healthy teeth next to the lost tooth. They provide an aesthetically natural appearance and restore chewing function.

What are Implant-Free Solutions?

Implant treatments are possible even for individuals with severe bone loss or those with poor systemic (general health) conditions. Nowadays, with developing technology and methods, there are implant treatments and prosthesis options suitable for individuals. So, is implant treatment suitable for everyone?

People who have lost their own teeth due to neglect? … These people need to make some changes in order to continue their lives with teeth again. LIKE STARTING ORAL CARE AGAIN! …

Because implants, just like our teeth, are in an oral environment where there are many microorganisms. Therefore, oral care should be done for implants as much as for healthy teeth. In other words, if you are going to have implants, you have to take good care of these teeth.

Now, if we need to give general advice to people who are considering implant treatment, the following can be said;

  • Be sure to keep your systemic condition, that is, your general health, under control.
  • Adjust your smoking and diet so that your implants are not adversely affected by smoking.
  • Be sure to go to your dentist for regular check-ups.
  • Before doing brand and price research, make sure that this treatment is suitable for you. This issue is as important as your dentist's knowledge, skill and the quality of the implant in the success of your treatment.

I would like to talk about adhesive technologies, another developing aspect of dentistry, to those who say, “I don’t want implant treatment, what solutions should I look for if this treatment is not suitable for me?”

Namely, the enamel of the teeth is quite strong and this enamel has a suitable structure for adhesion. The tooth enamel (the top layer) holds the material that sticks to it with special adhesives, so that a tooth can carry the other tooth next to it.

In the past, and even today, teeth were cut; the teeth on both sides of an empty tooth were cut and veneers were made on them. This offered us the most commonly used treatment option for missing teeth. Now, it is possible to replace missing teeth with a system called the “MARYLAND” bridge without cutting the teeth at all.

Nowadays, 3D scanners have become devices that make the dentist’s life easier, especially in these operations. As a result of the scans made with these devices, missing teeth can be fixed without cutting the teeth next to them. Even if there is decay in the back molars and side teeth; the connection of the missing tooth to the side teeth can be made with fillings. In other words, both the filling needs of the side teeth and the missing tooth needs are met with “MARYLAND” bridges.

What is the Implant Alternative for People with Multiple Tooth Loss?

If there are 10-14 teeth in the person's mouth; "FULL MOUTH" bridges, which are bridges where all teeth are crowned, can be made. Especially in people with gum problems, the extra laser applied while cutting the teeth is very beneficial for gum healing. Namely, during this treatment, after all the teeth are cut, a temporary tooth is made for the patient to wear for a week. The patient gets his teeth on the same day after the tooth is cut.

First, after the tooth is cut, laser gum treatment is performed, followed by OZONE THERAPY that will accelerate gum healing around the teeth. This helps the bad microorganisms to leave the mouth. Also, all teeth move to a new closing, that is, pressing, with temporary teeth. Thus, the teeth that have taken excessive load due to the absence of teeth share the load with the adjacent teeth with the temporary ones. Thus, the shaking of the teeth is also reduced to some extent.

After the one-week waiting period is over with these temporary teeth, before moving on to new prostheses, they are bonded with adhesives containing CaOH2 that strengthen the tooth structure and kept for 2 months. This period may vary depending on the person; while it takes 2 months for some people, it may take 2 weeks for others. In the meantime, the inside of the other teeth is also repaired. In other words, the tooth is repaired both inside and outside and is prepared for the zirconium or metal-supported coating to be applied on it. The teeth are strengthened and refreshed. It is observed that many patients get rid of bad breath during this period. Then, the main prosthetic coatings suitable for the new facial integrity are made.

In people with only a few teeth and no bone in their mouth, with dentures that are partly fixed and partly removable, which we call SNAP PROSTHESIS, our patient can have aesthetic relief while also regaining their chewing functions.

In cases where implant treatment is not desired or is not suitable for the person, in other words, in applications where implant treatment is not an option, it is possible to apply modernized versions of treatment methods to our patients. In dentistry, the construction of missing teeth is a science and art that dates back to ancient times, to the Egyptians. For this reason, the treatment of missing teeth should not be neglected.
