Porcelain Lamina
The teeth that nature gives us can turn yellow and break over time, or they may have been misaligned, deformed, or colored by antibiotics etc. With developing technology, it is possible to close the gaps between teeth or add a new design to teeth by correcting their alignment.
Now, with the developing technology; we can form an idea about this treatment by evaluating the photos our patients take on their phones in advance. Our patients can even do this themselves using different programs. In other words; they can form an idea about their new smile.
What is Porcelain Laminate?
The process of placing porcelain leaves prepared by the technician on the tooth surface with or without a preparation on the tooth surface for the purpose of protecting the healthy tissues of the tooth is called porcelain laminate. Here, the protection of the healthy tooth tissue is provided. If the tooth is to be thinned, a cut of 0.3-0.7 ml is made. During this cut, special magnifying glasses are used, and microscopes can be used for greater magnification.
What are the Types of Porcelain Laminates?
Porcelain laminate application is applied by cutting or without any cutting on the tooth. For this reason, porcelain laminate application is divided into two as cutting and non-cutting.
How is Porcelain Laminate Treatment Performed?
Laminate dental application, also known as leaf veneer, is done for aesthetic purposes. Therefore, every stage should be managed delicately and meticulously so that our patient does not experience any disappointment after the treatment.
Patient-Doctor Relationship Before Porcelain Laminate Production
As in every treatment, it is necessary to listen to the patient's story in aesthetic dentistry. What is our patient unhappy about their teeth? Is it their color, shape, or length? In order to understand all of these in advance, it is absolutely necessary to talk about them up front. We should also know the structural characteristics of our patient. For example, some patients are traditional and cannot easily adapt to the changes in their body. Some patients cannot fully express their expectations. For this reason, it is useful to clarify everything and get approval from the patient.
Is Every Porcelain Laminate Treatment Suitable for Me?
The best way to understand this is through a mock-up appointment where we determine what our teeth will look like.
When you decide to have Porcelain Laminate, first of all, photos of your teeth and face are taken. Because teeth are there for smiling, that is, the teeth should be evaluated with the integrity of your face. Sometimes small touches on your teeth create big differences, and sometimes when you feel the need for a bigger smile, you need to touch up a lot of work. This is decided entirely by seeing the mock-up we will make for our patients on their faces.
Who is Suitable for Porcelain Laminates?
Since porcelain laminate application is becoming more popular day by day, it is now a demand of many people. For this reason, it should be explained from the beginning that porcelain laminate will not be applied to every individual and cannot be applied. Porcelain laminate is applied to people who have completed their growth and development and have a well-established skeletal structure.
- In case of mild tooth misalignment
- In cases where teeth are aged and worn out
- Congenitally discolored teeth
- Teeth that have lost their broken and cracked appearance for aesthetic reasons
- It is applied to those who want a new smile design.
Who Cannot Have Porcelain Laminates?
- Those who have the habit of clenching their teeth while sleeping at night
- In those with jaw structure disorders
- Those who have a nail biting habit
- Advanced tooth discoloration (in those with fluorosis and tetracycline discoloration)
- Those who consume excessive amounts of alcohol, cigarettes and cola
Stages
In order to plan a smile design, the person's wishes are first determined. These wishes are understood with a series of relevant surveys. In this survey, the elements that the person does not like about their teeth are determined one by one and at the same time, the kind of smile they want to achieve is revealed with the questions asked. In addition, we try to understand the wishes of our patients with the cases we have done before in our clinic.
With the desire for each treatment to be personalized, it is very important for us to look at the before and afters of the treatments we have performed in the past and to understand our patient's wishes during this time. For this reason, our first examination takes about 1.5 hours because the positions and health of the teeth are evaluated one by one with both x-rays and special 3D scanners. When the wishes are understood as a result of this evaluation, we want to show a three-dimensional image of these wishes to our patients.
Preliminary Proof Mockup
It is the display of a three-dimensional image of what the dentist has in mind and what our patient has in mind. During this time, our patient has the chance to see their new appearance on their face, take photos of them and even spend a day with those teeth. We know that our patients have different temperaments in the decision-making process. For this reason, we also allow a decision-making process specific to each temperament. Some people feel the need to show their teeth to others and get ideas, and for this reason, Mock-Up is a method that allows them to spend a day with their teeth to meet this need. After this whole process, we can move on to the measurement phase.
Taking Measurements
Sometimes, a preparation is made on the tooth without even needing anesthesia. With today's developing technologies, porcelain laminate measurements can be taken without even cutting the teeth. Digital measurement methods and manual measurement methods are used.
Making Temporary Laminates
After the measurement is taken, we definitely prepare temporary composites for our patient. These temporary composites give our patient an idea about their new teeth. This is a very important stage, because the process they spend with this tooth, which lasts about a week, until the new teeth are made, both shapes the lip support and helps our patient adapt to the new tooth appearance.
Technician Producing Porcelain Laminate
The technique to be used in the production of porcelain laminates and the technician's dexterity vary. There are many porcelain laminate brands and techniques. Here, according to the result to be obtained, previously taken photographs and mock-ups guide the technician in this sense. When we only work on the upper teeth, the photographs to be taken from the lower works give us information about the patient's new dental appearance.
Transparency, form, shape are conveyed to the technician one by one according to the new smile design. For this, videos are frozen from time to time, images obtained with photographs and scanners, the structure of the new tooth, its appearance, the desired and expectations are explained to the technician one by one and the technician produces the porcelain laminates by choosing the color and material accordingly. The production period is usually five days.
Rehearsal
Before the upper surfaces of the porcelain laminates are polished, a trial is performed. After the temporary laminates are removed, porcelain laminates are placed in the mouth with adhesives that will hold the teeth in the mouth. After this placement, the dentist performs small micro-adaptations of the teeth because porcelain laminates are personalized designs and during the trial, our patient has the chance to see the adaptation of the teeth to the face from every angle, their color and shape for the last time. This appointment usually lasts for 1-1.5 hours. Our patients can come to this appointment with a companion whose aesthetic perspective they trust.
Bonding of Porcelain Laminates
Porcelain laminates have a translucent appearance and are quite fragile and delicate. Therefore, the bonding session takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.
During bonding, the inside of the porcelain laminates are subjected to a series of preparations. Similarly, the tooth surfaces are disinfected with special disinfectants. The aim here is to bond the porcelain laminate to the tooth in an extremely clear and solid manner. Once the porcelain laminate has bonded ideally, it cannot be easily removed. For this reason, the bonding session requires great care and attention.
After the individual bondings are performed, the adhesive residues are carefully cleaned, the teeth are prepared for interdental cleaning, and when the bonding session is over, the porcelain laminates are completely adapted to the teeth. In order to provide our patient with a longer usage period, a night plate measurement is taken immediately after this procedure.
What Should Our Patients Pay Attention to After Porcelain Laminates Are Bonded?
It is necessary not to consume tea, coffee, cola and cigarettes for 24 hours from the day of bonding because such substances will stain the adhesive during the full adaptation of the adhesive.
Even if a bite check is performed, care should be taken not to bite until the next check.
The adhesive residues left between the teeth may fall into the mouth like small splinters. In this case, our patients should not panic. From the very first moment, brushing should be started carefully from the gums to the teeth. The use of the Night Plate should be started immediately.
How Can I Use My Porcelain Veneers for a Longer Time?
It is very important not to neglect control appointments in all restorations. Of course, as in all treatments, regular oral care increases the life of the restoration. Using the night plate regularly and being careful while biting, especially not biting very hard things by pulling, is necessary for the long-lasting use of porcelain laminates. We should never break hard-shelled things with our front teeth. Apart from this, we can eat things like soft toast bread by biting.
What are the advantages of laminate dental application?
The fact that laminate dental application is frequently preferred in the field of aesthetic dentistry is closely related to the advantages it offers. We can give the following examples of how this process provides a good advantage:
- There is no color change in the leaf porcelain material used.
- Resistant to breakage and cracking
- An appearance very close to the real tooth is achieved.
- It has a stronger and more durable structure than expected.
- It exhibits an aesthetically beautiful appearance
- It does not cause any change in the structure of the original tooth and supports the tooth enamel structure.
Does Porcelain Laminate Harm Teeth?
Porcelain laminate application, which is applied meticulously and carefully by an experienced dentist, does not cause any harm to the teeth and gum tissues. However, if oral and dental hygiene is neglected after the procedure and regular night plate is not used, laminate applications will lose their beauty, shine and integrity over time.
How Long Does Porcelain Laminate Treatment Last?
If oral and dental cleaning and care is taken after the leaf tooth procedure, the teeth will be used for a long time.
