Vitamin D and Oral Health

The Relationship Between Vitamin D and Wisdom Teeth Extractions

To date, no studies have investigated vitamin D levels in patients with impacted mandibular third molars. Only Oteri et al. have related the degree of difficulty and related complications in wisdom tooth extraction to vitamin D dosages. With the administration of 300,000 IU of cholecalciferol four days before surgical removal of lower third molars, a significant reduction in postoperative edema and inflammatory responses was reported, resulting in a more favorable clinical course.

Vitamin D, Tooth Decay, Tooth Loss Relationship

It is an indicator of vitamin D and/or vitamin K2 deficiency.
Tooth loss is normally an indication of vitamin D deficiency. For dental health, the blood vitamin D level should be above 50ng/ml. If vitamin D is normal, it can be explained by vitamin K2 deficiency.
For the absorption of vitamin D, it must be taken with vitamin K2.

Vitamin D supplementation has been shown to both reduce the risk of caries and improve periodontal diseases by affecting the production of antimicrobial peptides (cathelicidins and defensins) and is effective against gram-negative, gram-positive bacteria and Candida albicans.

Inadequate nutrition and vitamin D deficiency during the formation of milk and permanent teeth can affect the enamel-dentin sequence in the formation of teeth and cause congenital defects in the teeth.
Inadequate vitamin D concentrations have been associated with periodontal disease, higher tooth and oral bone loss during pregnancy, and atrophy of the salivary glands.
